Lately, life has been teaching me lessons I would have preferred to learn another way.

Not through big moments or dramatic turning points, but through delays, detours, and quiet disappointments that ask me to slow down and pay attention.

These lessons have not arrived all at once. They have unfolded gently, sometimes uncomfortably, over time.

Setbacks Are Part of the Story

I am learning that setbacks are not evidence that I have failed or missed God’s direction. They are not a sign that I misunderstood His voice or took a wrong turn.

They are part of being human.

Growth rarely moves in a straight line. It bends, pauses, and circles back. Progress often looks like stopping and starting again, not because something went wrong, but because learning takes time.

A setback does not erase the work already done. It simply invites adjustment.

Letting Go of My Timeline

I am also learning that very little in life unfolds according to my schedule.

I like clarity. I like plans. I like knowing what comes next. But again and again, I am reminded that God’s timing is not rushed or careless.

Waiting feels uncomfortable because it exposes our lack of control. It asks us to trust when we would rather move.

But waiting is not empty time. It is shaping time.

Some things need space to deepen before they are revealed. Some answers arrive only after patience has done its quiet work.

Joy Is Often Found in Small Moments

One of the most surprising lessons I am learning is about joy.

I used to think joy would come after resolution. After answers. After things felt settled.

But joy often appears in the middle, not at the end.

It shows up quietly in moments that are easy to overlook if I am focused only on what is missing. A moment of laughter. A peaceful pause. A sense of gratitude that catches me off guard.

Joy does not always announce itself. Sometimes it waits to be noticed.

Choosing to Notice the Glimmers

I am learning that joy requires intention.

Not forcing happiness. Not ignoring pain.

But choosing to notice what is still good, still beautiful, still present.

There are glimmers of joy every day, even on hard days. They may be small, but they matter. When I slow down enough to see them, they become anchors of hope.

Choosing joy does not mean pretending everything is fine. It means allowing light to exist alongside uncertainty.

God Is Present in the Unfolding

Perhaps the most grounding truth I am learning is this.

God is not only present at the finish line. He is present in the unfolding.

He is with us in the waiting, the setbacks, and the learning curves. Even when life feels delayed or disrupted, He is still working, shaping, and guiding.

This season, just as it is, is not empty. It is forming something that could not be shaped any other way.

Learning to Be Gentle With Myself

I am also learning to extend grace to myself as I learn these lessons.

Growth takes time. Understanding comes slowly. Some lessons must be revisited more than once.

That does not mean I am behind. It means I am human.

If you are learning things the hard way too, you are not alone. You are not failing. You are becoming.

And even here, there is meaning, hope, and grace waiting to be found.
